Our Footprint

Our History
Since its establishment in 1926, QCAR has been unwavering in its dedication to providing essential services to sugarcane farmers in the Burdekin region. This commitment to the industry traces back to the inception of Pioneer Mill, which originated from a collaborative effort led by the Drysdale brothers.
It marked its inaugural cane crushing operation on August 5, 1884, and by 1895, it had commenced sugar sales to the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. (CSR). In the year 1960, Pioneer Sugar Mills Pty Ltd underwent a transformation, becoming a publicly traded company. Eventually, in 1987, it came under the ownership of CSR Ltd.
During the early 20th century, there arose a necessity for unified representation of cane farmers. This was primarily to engage in negotiations with the proprietors of Pioneer Mill and liaise with governmental authorities. The roots of QCAR, previously known as the Pioneer Cane Growers Organisation Ltd can be traced back to the United Cane Growers Association of Australia, which was a voluntary entity. Subsequently, in 1926, the Queensland Cane Growers Association was established as a statutory body by the State Government. This marked the beginning of the Pioneer Mill Suppliers Committee’s role in representing the interests of growers.
Fast forward to 2005, and a significant shift occurred. For philosophical reasons and to assert their independence, Pioneer growers decided to disassociate themselves from the State representative body. As a result, the Pioneer Cane Growers Organisation Ltd. (PCGO) emerged as a distinct and autonomous member representative organisation, dedicated to safeguarding the interests of its members.
Today, we see the emergence of Queensland Cane, Agriculture and Renewables (QCAR) which is driving profitable and positive outcomes for Queensland’s broadacre growers. QCAR signifies a broader strategic vision and expanded focus that aligns with evolving industry dynamics and the need for sustainable development. Shifting from a Regional identity to a statewide one reflects a desire to encompass Queensland’s coastal cane and agricultural landscape. Widening the reach, allows us to address issues and opportunities at a larger scale. With an emphasis on renewables aligns with the global shift towards sustainable energy sources enabling growers and communities to be a part of a greener and more resilient future.
