As two of Australia’s leading cane organisations QCAR, and the Australian Cane Farmers Association (ACFA) have united forces to drive strategic change across the industry.

QCAR Chairman, Charles Quagliata, said the significant benefits this partnership will bring to the sugarcane industry, marks a pivotal moment for growth and positive change.

The collaboration aims to enhance advocacy efforts, support growers, and amplify the industry’s voice.

The integration will expand our geographical footprint spanning from Mossman in North Queensland to Harwood, New South Wales.

ACFA Chairman, Don Murday, highlighted the focus on working with governments and establishing district committees to address regional challenges. These 5 regional district committees are:

  • Far North Queensland
  • Herbert
  • Burdekin
  • Central Queensland
  • South East Queensland and New South Wales

Burdekin

Position Available – Burdekin District Manager

QCAR is seeking an enthusiastic and progressive individual to join our team to fulfil the new role of Burdekin District Manager.

The position of Burdekin District Manager will have the responsibility of the following functions:

• Oversee District Management Support across all QCAR areas, Burdekin Membership Services, and the Operations of the Burdekin Office.
• Reporting to the Burdekin District Committee and the CEO.
• Implement processes to action the strategic direction of the Board.
• Implement internal policies and procedures.
• Direct engagement with Members and Prospective Members.
• Engage with key industry stakeholders including respective sugar millers and all other relevant industry and government agencies.
• Be familiar with and provide after-care services of relevant member Cane Supply Agreements.
• Engage with Community

• Actively promote QCAR.
• Priority focus on membership growth.
• Provide secretariat support to the Burdekin District Committee in consultation with the Chair who is a Director on the QCAR Board.

To be successful in this role, you will require:
• In-depth familiarity with the production of cane and the sugarcane industry processes.
• Prior exposure and experience dealing with Committees and Boards.
• Outstanding leadership capabilities, including the ability to build, develop and maintain a highly engaged and collaborative team.
• High energy, enthusiasm and drive, inspiring others to achieve.
• A demonstrated drive and genuine commitment to Member Services and Engagement.

Salary is commensurate to knowledge and industry experience.

Mackay Sugar Deal a Success!

In recent news, Mackay Sugar and QCAR have sealed a pivotal deal on a new Cane Supply and Processing Agreement (CSPA) starting April 30, 2024.

This agreement, spanning supplies to three Mackay Sugar mills, emphasises sustainability and sets clear guidelines for cane growing and supply practices, aligning with global standards.

Brent Casey, Mackay Sugar’s General Manager, underscores the significance of such partnerships in promoting sustainable practices. Through dedicated advocacy, QCAR is committed to empowering Queensland agriculture producers. Chris Punzell, QCAR Director, expresses satisfaction in fulfilling Mackay growers’ needs, while Executive Director Panikos Spyrou reaffirms QCAR’s commitment to a stronger future.

Effective immediately, the agreement ensures stability for the next four years, benefiting both growers and miller. Jannik Olejas, Mackay Sugar CEO, extends appreciation for the constructive discussions leading to this milestone agreement.
