qcar members in the herbert discussing the 2023 cane crushing season

Reflecting on the 2023 season

As 2023 nears its end, reflections on the sugarcane season prompt preparations for more prosperous years ahead. Central to the industry’s concerns has been the timely supply of sugar cane from grower to mill, a challenge that QCAR is actively addressing.

QCAR stands as the bridge between the field sector and milling field departments, addressing the critical issue of timely cane supply. Amongst a myriad of social, safety, environmental, and financial consequences, delays in cane supply directly impact sugar content.

In response to delays, particularly in burnt cane districts, QCAR collaborates with stakeholders to bridge gaps and find solutions.

QCAR is actively committed to finding solutions and at the forefront, advocating for a hands-on approach back in the paddock, with a focus on specific milling areas. We are looking for performance rates to soar into the 90s, leaving nothing in the 80s. Embracing efficiency for a thriving agricultural indu

Latest update on the fertilizer market, focusing on UREA.

International market activity is seeing a resurgence, driven by low prices and increased demand in regions like Brazil.
While Europe remains  relatively quiet, expectations are for re-entry as inventory levels decrease. Locally, UREA sales are steady, but global price fluctuations are influencing formula offers. Reduced vessel availability may result in price hikes, so it’s essential to monitor  availability in the upcoming months.

Herbert

flooding in the herbert region 2023RECENT FLOODING

We extend our sympathies to the cane farmers in the Lower Herbert region affected by recent floods.

QCAR’s Senior Technical Officer, Lawrence Di Bella, and member Michael Penna conducted on-site inspections to assess the damage.

While some blocks remain waterlogged with yield losses, the overall impact is less severe than in previous floods. Infrastructure damage and rat issues have been observed. For impacted farmers seeking assistance, please contact the local QCAR office or reach out to Anna Di Bella at 0419 673 000.

HERBERT GROWERS HAVING THEIR SAY!

In December, QCAR held productive meetings in the Herbert region, engaging with growers and prospective members. We discussed the unique benefits of QCAR membership, our service model, and the upcoming Herbert QCAR Office in partnership with Di Bella Produce.

Lawrence and Anna DiBella’s invaluable services were highlighted. Key matters for the 2023 season, such as CCS discrepancies and cane stand-over, were addressed. We also covered season start dates, fatigue management, bin allotment, and cane supply and transport.

Discussions extended to training programs and the acknowledgment of the harvest sector. Special thanks to Tracpower NQ PTY LTD for their support. QCAR remains dedicated to advocating for your interests and shaping a prosperous future for the cane industry.
