QCAR SUGARCANE INDUSTRY FORUM

A recent meeting in Ayr brought together 150 sugarcane producers to address critical issues impacting the sugarcane industry, with a particular focus on mill availability and operator accountability. Amid strike action at eight Wilmar Sugar and Renewables mills, attendees voiced their concerns over the detrimental effects on the current and upcoming harvest seasons, with tensions running high throughout the discussion. The meeting stressed the need for mills to maintain high productivity and availability, as the industry grapples with labour shortages, government regulations, and the overarching need for operational efficiency to sustain the sector.

The forum also highlighted the pressing challenges faced by growers due to industrial disputes, resulting in significant financial losses and delayed harvesting. The importance of collaboration and dialogue with all industry stakeholders, including government bodies, was stressed to address these issues and explore new opportunities such as renewable energy ventures with Energy Estate. Despite the absence of the Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) at the meeting, there remains optimism about the industry’s potential for growth and innovation, advocating for unity and proactive measures to secure a stronger future for the sugarcane sector.

Unity and proactive engagement are essential if we are to overcome the significant challenges facing our industry and secure a sustainable and prosperous future for all stakeholders involved.
