Queensland Cane Agriculture & Renewables (QCAR) expresses its enthusiastic support for Jet Zero Australia’s recent announcement of a groundbreaking license and Engineering Agreement with LanzaJet, heralding a new era of sustainable aviation in Australia.

A consortium comprising Qantas, Airbus, U.S.-based LanzaJet, and Jet Zero Australia stands as the driving force behind the development of a sugarcane jet fuel plant in Townsville. This transformative project, known as Project Ulysses, is set to produce 102 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per annum, along with 11 million litres of renewable diesel, leveraging LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology.

QCAR represents sugarcane producers to drive positive change and create a more resilient future for the agriculture industry.

CEO of QCAR, Panikos Spyrou said this partnership represents a remarkable opportunity for Queensland’s sugarcane industry and the broader agricultural sector. Jet Zero’s commitment to clean aviation aligns with QCAR’s mission to promote sustainable practices in the agricultural sector.

QCAR’s sugarcane producers are conveniently located near Townsville, offering an accessible source of sugarcane for ethanol and SAF production.

“By repurposing agricultural byproducts into sustainable aviation fuel, we not only bolster regional economies but also contribute to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions, Mr Spyrou said.

Russell Hall, Director of QCAR, underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in driving innovation and economic growth. “The collaboration between key stakeholders demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic development,” says Hall. “We look forward to supporting this project and its positive impact on our regional communities.”

Charles Quagliata, Chair of QCAR, emphasised the transformative impact of the project on Australia’s agriculture and aviation landscape, saying we are excited about the prospects of this initiative and its potential to create new opportunities for growers and industry stakeholders.

Plans for the new Townsville refinery bringing 1100 jobs add to the significance of this milestone agreement. The SAF plant, slated to commence construction in 2024, is poised to position Australia as a leader in sustainable aviation, providing a blueprint for clean energy initiatives nationwide.
