QCAR Addresses Impact of Wilmar Sugar Industrial Action through Fair Work Commission Submission
In response to the growing crisis within Queensland’s sugarcane industry, Queensland Cane, Agricultural and Renewables (QCAR) is convening a critical Sugarcane Industry Forum to tackle urgent challenges.
This forum aims to unite stakeholders to address severe issues plaguing the industry, including milling preparedness, reliability, and availability, as well as cultural challenges.
The CEO of QCAR, Stephen Ryan, said, the decline in our sugar mills’ reliability over the past two decades is alarming. Mills that once operated with remarkable reliability are now frequently experiencing breakdowns and delays. There cannot be continual delays and shutdowns as these impact growers, contractors, and the broader community economically. Such disruptions affect season lengths, crop quality, ratooning, and overall crop returns.
This forum is a crucial step towards bringing all parties together to find sustainable solutions.Mr Ryan said.
QCAR Chair, Christian Lago said it’s essential that we address not only the operational inefficiencies but also the cultural issues that hinder our progress. By uniting stakeholders, we can confront these challenges head-on and develop a comprehensive action plan supported by everyone involved.
AgForce Cane President, Russell Hall said our growers are under immense pressure due to the operational issues at the mills. It’s time we bring everyone to the table and develop solutions that ensure the sustainability and profitability of our industry.
